DIY Easy and Cheap Kids Artwork Display Wall

In this post you will learn how to make an artwork display wall for all your kids beautiful art work.

Kids Artwork Display Wall

I knew I wanted to make a artwork display wall for my kids artwork before I became a mom. I wanted to have a place to show my kids that I cared about them, showcase what they did, and show off their accomplishments. Plus, I’m sure there is some science behind displaying kids artwork and an increased feeling in love and security.

I think it is something I want to continue doing even when my kids get older, no matter how much they hate it. I want them to always know that I love them.

Here comes a tangent…does anyone else worry about whether their kids know you love them? I mean, do I say it enough? Do I show them enough? I think it’s hard to tell sometimes. Kids perceive things differently than we think, so I’m not always sure how they perceive what I’m saying or doing. I just know I have to tell them all day everyday!

Anyway…

A kids display wall is a great way to show them some love.

We currently live in an apartment, and for some reason, I thought we needed to be in a house before I could start my display wall dreams.

I was wrong.

I put our display wall up on a whim one Saturday. I don’t know about you, but my first grader brings home piles and piles of papers. Artwork, math problems, reading assignments, and ALL the possible things they did in class that day. It just adds up so quickly. I felt bad for always throwing it away. (I always keep the good stuff.)

I wanted a place to store it all, and show her that I cared about what she was doing at school, so this wall came about.

I already had all of the supplies on hand, and it took me like 5 minutes to put up.

How to put up a Kids artwork display wall

Supplies:

8-10 feet of Twine, or another type of thick string (I don’t think fish line, or a small string would work. You would need a rope type string)

6-8 Nails (Tacks might work here, but Nails are definitely sturdier. These are the nails I used)

12-18 Clothespins (These are great to have on hand for everything!)

Instructions:

Decide which space you want to use, and decide how big you want your display wall to be. I used a small strip of wall in our dining room. It’s about 3-4 feet wide. I wanted my display to be about 2-3 feet wide, with about 3 rows of display rope. Also, decide if you want your rope to hang loose or taunt. I wanted my loose.

Place your nails or tacks in the wall. Since I wanted my display 2 feet wide, I placed my nails about 2 feet apart on each row.Kids display wall

You can use a level to make sure your nails are perfectly lined up. You could also be like me and eyeball it by tying your string to one nail after you place it and pull it tight to where you would put the other nail and see how your rope looks. If it looks straight to the naked eye, it’ll probably look good.

If you’re doing the lose rope look, eye balling it will look just fine. If you want the taunt rope, it might be best to use a leveler.

Place another row of nails about 1-1/2 to 2 feet apart from the row above to account for the hanging rope, the 11-12 inches of paper that will hang from it, and wanting a little bit of space in between each row.

Measure out the rope/twine for how wide you want you display wall and then add a few more inches so that your rope sags. (This is the style I like, you can do it tight if that’s what you prefer.)

Tie the end of each rope to the nail/tack.

Place clothes pins along the ropes.

Hang up artwork with the clothespins.

My kids love seeing their artwork on the wall. I try to change it out every few weeks, but they don’t always let me take them down. Somehow they notice, haha.

I keep a file in my room for the things I want to keep forever. I know I’ll miss seeing what they do at this age. I wish I could keep everything, but then I’d become a hoarder by the time my kids graduate High School.

And that’s how you put up an art display wall on a whim when you have a few minutes on a Saturday.
