Easy Homemade Apple Turnovers

Apple Turnovers

You know those little pies that you can buy for like .99 cents at just about any grocery store? They are like a bazillion calories, but they are so good! I love them. I love pie, and one of my favorite things about pie is the crust! Am I the only one?

This recipe kind of came out of mishap, it’s a long story, but now I’m a little obsessed with it. There is a small twist on the recipe. It isn’t made like an usual turnover. It uses cinnamon and honey, which I LOVE!

It’s super easy, doesn’t take that long to make, and you probably have all the ingredients on hand.

My kids love them, and they are great with ice cream, hot out of the oven.

2 apples
6 biscuits Dough (uncooked)
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon + 1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Brown Sugar
4 Tbsp honey
1/4 tsp vanilla
Egg wash
Optional: 1/4 c. Chocolate Chips

Instructions:

Short version: Here is the, right to the point, recipe.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with baking spray.

Prepare the biscuits by flattening them with your hands or rolling them out with a rolling pin into a circle that’s about 3-4 inches in diameter.

Peel and dice the apples to the size you like them and place them into a bowl.

Combined with the apples the lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon, sugar, and brown sugar. Stir until combined. Set aside.

In a small bowl stir the honey and the other 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon until well combined. Set aside.

Make some egg wash by combining 1 egg and 2 tbsp of water. Stir well. Set aside.

Place a small amount of the honey mixture onto one half of each rolled out biscuit (for pictures, see below) until gone.

Take a scoop of apples and place on top of the honey mixture on each rolled out biscuit.

Optional: If you’d like to add chocolate, you can put a small scoop of chocolate chips over your apples.

Fold the biscuit over and pinch the ends together so that it forms a little pie turnover. (for pictures, see below). Tip: the honey will start to seep off the biscuit so the faster you close the biscuit, the easier it is to work with. It’s okay if the honey seeps out, it will just be a little messy, but still tastes good.

Brush the turnover with egg was, especially on the edges.

Cut 3 little slits on the top of each turn over with a knife.

Place the turnovers on the baking sheet and place in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until the biscuit is cooked all the way through. It should be a nice golden brown.

Best severe hot with ice cream on top.

Easy Homemade Apple Turnovers

Long version: this is the long version with pictures, tips, my experience, and way too many of my opinions.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with baking spray. (This has been one of my favorite baking sheets, it’s so easy to clean!)

Prepare the biscuits by flattening them with your hands or rolling them out with a rolling pin into a circle that’s about 3-4 inches in diameter. I think it is easiest to prepare directly onto the baking sheet so you don’t have to keep moving them. Just make sure you spray it first.

Combined with the apples the lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon, sugar, and brown sugar. Stir until combined. Set aside. You will probably have some of these left over, but they are so good to eat just by themselves. This is a great dessert idea when you don’t want to eat too many calories.

In a small bowl stir the honey and the other 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon until well combined. Set aside. Cinnamon goes a long way, so if you just want a hint of cinnamon, you could do less.

Optional: If you’d like to add chocolate, you can put a small scoop of chocolate chips over your apples. You could add so much to these turnovers to make them your own: Nutella, peanut butter, other fruits, you name it! Be creative.

It’s okay if the honey seeps out, it will just be a little messy, but still tastes good. Also, sometimes they get messy so they don’t stick together as well, that’s okay, just get them to stick as well as you can. They will still turn out.

Brush the turnover with egg was, especially on the edges. (love my silicone brush).

Cut 3 little slits on the top of each turnover with a knife. There is not an art to this part, just a little slit.

Something else you could do, that I forgot, is sprinkle the tops with a little bit of sugar.

Place the turnovers on the baking sheet and place in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until the biscuit is cooked all the way through. It should be a nice golden brown.

If you had any honey seep out, I recommend wiping off your baking sheet before placing it in the oven.
