Paint By Number for Toddlers (or by Letter): Alphabet Preschool Crafts

A great alphabet preschool craft for toddlers. A paint by number (or letter) for toddlers can help toddlers and kids learn their alphabet.

Paint by Number

My son loves to paint. He’d do it every day if I’d let him, but he’s not quite to the point where I want him to do it unsupervised. And, I got to admit, momma doesn’t want to paint every day. Although, my kids don’t seem to understand how hard it is to just get the paints out.

Side note: I cannot wait until my kids are old enough to understand how hard being a mom really is. I know it won’t be until they have their own kids…but still. (that’s how I was anyway) They just don’t know how good they have it. Am I right? (okay, rant over)

Anyway. I wanted to create a way for him to paint and learn and challenge him. I looked for some easy paint by number, but couldn’t really find what I was looking for, so I decided to make my own.

I made these cute little paint by number. (well actually they are letters, not numbers, because I wanted to stay with the letter theme)

I think you’ll like them a lot. My son is 3. He understood the activity, but needed guidance. I felt like it stretched him and he learned. My daughter, who is 6, joined us as well, and she LOVED it. I thought it would be too simple for her, but it wasn’t, she thought it was really fun. (I’m thinking about making some with just shapes for her to paint, so stay tuned for those).

I like these printable because they have big enough spaces, making it easy for little kids, especially toddlers to paint them. The key is super easy, easy to use, and adds its own little component of learning. I hope you like them too!

Have them paint the page according to the key. You could add more learning by talking to them about the letter while they paint. Ask them what sounds it makes, what words start with that letter, and how it fits in the alphabet.

Do as many letters as you can until they get bored. haha.

My daughter, who is 6, also loved this craft. It’s super easy to paint and its fun!

More Learning with Paint by Number Alphabet Preschool Craft

Here are a few more ideas for creating a successful learning activity and craft:

  • You could do 1 letter a day or 1 letter a week and spread out the love. Discussing only that letter for a week is good repetition for kids to really grasp the concept.
  • Do other things associated with each letter they paint, before or after. Here are some more preschool alphabet activity ideas.
  • Use crayons, markers, colored pencils or chalk in place of the paint.
  • If you have an older child, have them paint or color designs onto their letter.
  • Use their paintings to create an alphabet display in their room or learning area.
