Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! It kicks off the holiday season, and you get to eat lots of yummy food. It’s also a great family holiday, which makes it perfect for a game of Thanksgiving-themed taboo.
After you’ve eaten all the yummy food and taken your nap, gather your family around the table and get your Thanksgiving taboo cards for some family fun with a fast-paced game.

What Is Taboo?
Taboo is an entertaining and lively game that you can buy pretty much anywhere games are sold. You have a card with a word that you are trying to get your team to guess without saying that word.
But, you also have other words on the card that you are not allowed to say. It can be tricky, but it’s also so much fun!
How Do You Play Thanksgiving Taboo?
Thanksgiving Taboo is just like Taboo only all the cards are Thanksgiving-themed. Here are the rules:
What you need: Cards, 1 minute timer, buzzer or bell
- Break up into two teams.
- One team picks a person from their team to be the clue giver. They try to get their team to guess the word on top of the card as fast as they can. However, they can not say any of the other five words listed on the card.
- Someone from the opposite team needs to look over their shoulder to make sure they don’t say the wrong words. If they do, they get buzzed and lose a point. They will have to go to the next card.
- Try to get through as many cards before the 1-minute timer is up. You can do 3-minutes if one is too short.
- Switch teams and have the other team do the same thing. Continue to take turns and have a different person be the clue giver each time.
- Each card is a point.
- The team with the most cards/points at the end of the game wins.
Thanksgiving Taboo Card Game Variations
There are a few variations you can do according to your family’s needs or wants. If you have a little one play with you, you could take away the words you can’t say. They can say whatever they want as long as it’s not the original word.
Another way is to make it slightly easier by just taking away some of the words you can’t say. Maybe just avoid the top 2 or 3 words. These word cards can also be used for Thanksgiving Pictionary or charades. It’s like 3 games in one!
A hard variation of Thanksgiving Taboo would be to have a team member come up with a meaning to the word while not saying any of the Taboo words. Could be funny!
Another hard variation is having the whole team, except one, see the word card. They have to ask questions to the one team member to try and get them to guess the word. However, they can not say any of the Taboo words in the questions. This would be great in a classroom.
