What is a Paper Lantern?

A paper lantern is a lightweight craft made from paper that is folded, cut, and shaped to create an open, lantern-style design. Traditionally, paper lanterns are used for decoration, but they can also be used as teaching tools. For kids, paper lanterns are especially appealing because they are simple to assemble and look impressive when finished. When paired with scripture or symbols, a paper lantern becomes a visual reminder of an important message.

How to use a paper lantern to teach a Jesus lesson

A paper lantern is a powerful way to teach kids about Jesus as the Light of the World. As children assemble the lantern, you can talk about how light helps us see, feel safe, and find our way, just like Jesus does. Writing or displaying a scripture on the lantern reinforces the lesson and helps kids connect the craft to the Bible story. Once completed, the lantern can be displayed at home as a daily reminder of Jesus’ light.

How to make a paper lantern

Making a paper lantern is simple and requires only a few basic supplies, making it ideal for group settings or quick lessons.

Instructions:

First, print the lantern template on regular paper.

Next, cut off the end strip by following the cut line that runs all the way across the page.

Allow kids to color it however they like.

Then, fold the paper along the indicated line (hot dog style).

Starting at the fold, cut along the dotted lines on the lantern, being careful not to cut all the way to the edge of the page.

Roll the paper into a lantern shape so the ends meet, then secure them together with tape or glue.

Use the strip you cut off at the beginning to make a handle. Attach each end of the strip to the inside of the lantern with glue or tape.

Display your lantern or stand it up on a shelf. You could also add a cute fake candle to make it light up!
