Snowflakes with Toilet Paper Rolls

My kids wanted to do this activity as soon as I said glitter. I am generally not a glitter person. If I can avoid it, I will. I just feel like it gets EVERYWHERE for DAYS. It just doesn’t go away and it’s impossible to clean up. But I really feel like the glitter takes this craft to the next level. It makes it look really cute and nice, and not that it’s made out of toilet paper rolls.

This is a great Christmas craft that you can hang up in your home that looks nice and it was made with your kids. You can hang them in the window or from the ceiling. It is super simple and super cheap. So, start saving your toilet paper rolls so you can do this craft with your kiddos this Christmas.

Supplies:

Toilet paper rolls (I’d say at least 2 per snowflake)
Paint (I use acrylics)
Paint brushes (these work great)
Glue (I used Mod Podge, but you can use hot glue or gorilla glue)
Scissors
Ribbon or string (optional: if you want to hang it up)

Instructions:

First, paint the toilet paper rolls the color or colorS you want your snowflakes. Don’t cut them first like I did the first time. (dum dum). (I know snowflakes aren’t red, but I did red and white. I just really like the color red and thought it would look cool.)

Once they dry, cut the toilet paper rolls into strips. I recommend trying to make them the same size and try to get at least 7 if not 9 strips from it that are each about 1/4 of an inch.

Start gluing the pieces together to create your snowflake. You can kind of experiment to see what you want your snowflake to look like. You can lay them out to see what design you like the most and then just start gluing it like that. I glued the four together first, and then just started fitting them in where I thought they looked good. Don’t always glue it to the center, sometimes glue it in between the “spikes”.

Sometimes the glue can be frustrating, so I recommend using clothespins to keep them together while they dry. I was lazy and didn’t want to get the hot glue gun out, but it might be easier. The mod podge worked great once it was dry.

After it is completely dry, (you want to make sure it is completely dry so that it is easier to handle) apply some glue to the front edges of your snowflake and dip them into a plate of glitter. The alternative here would be to use some glitter glue. (Again, you can choose whatever color you want, I like red, even though snowflakes aren’t red.)

After that dries, you can add a ribbon or string to hang them up if you want.
